Delhi MCD Election Results 2022 Updates: Nearly 55% women among AAP winners

Seeking the “blessings” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got a clear mandate in the MCD polls on Wednesday, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal sought the support of the central government to make Delhi better and urged councillors across party lines to work together.

Of the 134 AAP candidates who managed to win MCD elections, at least 71 are women. That means nearly 55% of the victorious AAP candidates are women, according to the state election commission data.

AAP lost many wards in ministers’ turfs

The assembly constituencies of Delhi ministers proved to be a dampener for AAP. In Patparganj, Dy CM Manish Sisodia’s seat, 3 out of 4 wards were claimed by BJP with AAP winning 1. In Gopal Rai’s constituency (Babarpur), only 1 was won by AAP, with 2 taken by BJP and 1 by Cong. All 3 at Shakur Basti, the constituency of Satyendar Jain, were won by BJP. In Kailash Gahlot’s Najafgarh, 3 were won by BJP and 1 by an independent. Imran Hussain did better in Ballimaran with 2 of 3 going to AAP while at Patel Nagar, Raaj Kumar Anand’s constituency, AAP won all 4. However, AAP dominated in 4 of the 7 LS constituencies and the BJP two, while one saw an even contest. AAP won 20 of 25 wards in New Delhi while in East Delhi, BJP bagged 22 of 36 wards with AAP getting 11 and Cong three. In Chandni Chowk, AAP won 14 and BJP 16.

Decoding the MCD verdict: 8 points

• POOR SUPPORT AAP: Strong support from disadvantaged sections in illegal colonies and slums like Inderpuri, Sangam Vihar, Tughlaqabad and Kalyanpuri. They benefited from free power and water, improved schools and neighbourhood mohalla clinics
• MIXED VERDICT BY MINORITIES: Congress won in riot-affected areas of northeast Delhi and Okhla where Kejriwal’s silence on the riots and Bilkis Bano were factors but Muslims in Ballimaran, Chandni Mahal and Delhi Gate voted for AAP
• MIDDLE CLASS DIVIDED: AAP won in areas like Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Green Park, R K Puram, Vasant Vihar, C R Park and Mayur Vihar while BJP won Greater Kailash, 2 Dwarka wards, 4 Rohini wards, Punjabi Bagh, Rajouri Garden and Vasant Kunj
• POORVANCHALIS SPLIT: BJP managed to do well in Sonia Vihar, Karawal Nagar East, Karawal Nagar West and Nehru Vihar, which have a dominant Poorvanchali population, while AAP claimed Kirari, Burari and Ghonda. However, Congress managed to gain in Nihal Vihar and Shastri Park
• CORRUPTION CLAIMS: AAP promised to rid the corporation of corruption, saying Arvind Kejriwal was ‘kattar imandar’ and even promised funds for RWAs. BJP countered it with cases against dy CM Manish Sisodia and minister Satyendar Jain and LG ordering inquiries into AAP govt initiatives
• LEADERS VS LEADER: BJP drafted a battery of central ministers, MPs and chief ministers in the campaign with PM Narendra Modi looming over it all. The CM campaigned very little but there was never any doubt that he was the face of the part
• DOUBLE-ENGINE PITCH: CM countered BJP’s ‘double engine’ pitch with the slogan, ‘Kejriwal ki sarkar, Kejriwal ka parshad’ — his guarantee of work getting done
• CHOICE OF CANDIDATES: BJP fared better than expected as many candidates were old hands, with a local connect. Familiarity matters in such local-level elections

MCD: The civic story

• MCD came into existence on April 7, 1958, under an Act of Parliament
• It is governed by Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 and subsequent amendments
• After trifurcation in 2012, MCD was split into east, north and south corporations
• On April 18 this year, the three civic bodies were reunified into a single entity after DMC (Amendment) Act, 2022 came into effect
• Unification officially took place on May 22
• Thereafter, the number of MCD wards was reduced from 272 to 250, following another notification from the ministry of home affairs on September 10

MCD Election Result: For Delhi’s ‘tallest’ leaders, results prove a mixed bag

Though the municipal election results were clearly in favour of AAP, there was asymmetric voting trend, especially in the wards falling under the assembly constituencies of party stalwarts with large following.Deputy CM Manish Sisodia’s constituency Patparganj was one such area, where three out of four wards were grabbed by BJP. Among the winners was Ravinder Singh Negi, who defeated AAP’s Kuldeep Bhandari by over 2,000 votes at Vinod Nagar. Political parties like BSP and SP that had registered victory in 2017 civic body polls in the national capital have failed to make any significant mark in the MCD elections held on Sunday. According to the data shared by the State Election Commission, Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) received 1,31,770 votes, a meagre 1.80 per cent of the total votes polled in the December 4 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. MCD poll outcome won't impact 2024 LS polls

Political analysts said this outcome would not have any bearing on the 2024 General Elections as people's voting pattern during the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections differed widely. The defeat in Delhi might not reflect any pattern of voting for the urban population for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but the BJP may still require a relook at its strategy for state and local elections. BJP might need local face to take on Kejriwal in Delhi, say political analysts

Having lost two consecutive Assembly polls to the AAP, the BJP's latest defeat in the MCD elections might force the saffron party to redraw its strategy and project a local face to take on the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, say political analysts. The AAP on Wednesday ended the BJP's 15-year stint in the 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) -- trifurcated in 2012 into north, south and east corporations and unified this year -- by winning 134 seats while restricting the BJP to 104 seats. BJP trying to poach newly-elected AAP councillors: Sisodia

After a resounding victory in the MCD election, Delhi's deputy CM and AAP leader Manish Sisodia alleged that the BJP was trying to poach newly-elected AAP councillors. In a tweet, Sosidia said none of the councillors will fall prey to such tactics.

Even in defeat, BJP vote share rises by 3%

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday lost the MCD polls to the AAP in a close contest, but managed to raise its vote share by 3 per cent as compared to 2017 civic body elections in the national capital. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections held on Sunday with a comfortable majority, bagging 134 of the 250 wards. RWAs, traders hope for improved civic amenities from AAP-led MCD

Traders and Residents' Welfare Associations in Delhi on Wednesday expressed hope that civic amenities in the national capital would improve following the AAP's victory in the MCD elections as there would be limited opportunity to shift blame. (PTI)

The candidates who lost deposits include 370 independents, 188 candidates from the Congress, 128 from the BSP, 13 from the AIMIM, three from the AAP and 10 from the BJP, among others. (PTI)

Over 780 candidates lose deposit

Over 780 candidates who were in the fray in the civic polls in Delhi lost their deposit with the results being announced on Wednesday, according to data shared by the State Election Commission. A total of 1,349 candidates tested their fortunes in the high-stakes polls held on December 4. (PTI)

Music, songs, celebrations at AAP office

Loud music and beats of dhol reverberated across the Aam Aadmi Party office here which was decked up with colourful balloons as the party romped home victorious in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls on Wednesday. As soon as it became apparent that the party will register its first win in the civic body election, hundreds of workers and supporters along with leaders thronged the AAP office on Rouse Avenue and congratulated each other by distributing sweets. It has wrested power from the BJP which had won the MCD elections for three terms in the last 15 years. The Congress’s decline continues as the party, which ruled MCD and Delhi, has been relegated to a distant third spot.
