NEW DELHI: After getting inundated with Yamuna water during the previous week, the state government-run Sushrut Trauma Centre is slowing seeing things returning to normal.
While emergency services at the facility resumed on Sunday, indoor services and ICU facility will commence from Monday.
Nearly 40 patients had to be rescued from the hospital on Thursday after water from Yamuna flooded its ground floor. Located at Metcalf House, Civil Lines, the facility is the only trauma centre being operated under the state government. The hospital administration falls under Lok Nayak Hospital.
"The emergency services had to be restarted as we see a lot of accident cases," Dr Suresh Kumar, medical director, Lok Nayak Hospital, said.
The administration will also evaluate the damage done by the sudden flooding.
"Among the patients shifted were three who were on ventilator support. One of them is in a coma. It was a challenging task to move them out from Sushrut and bring them to Lok Nayak Hospital. The rest of the patients had fractures and other injuries. Some of the patients, who are in a comparatively stable condition and don't have major injuries, will be shifted back to the trauma centre by the coming week," Dr Kumar said.
On Thursday, the administration had set up 14 ambulances for the patients' rescue. A separate team was set up for the rescue of the medical staff from Sushrut. "The main transformer is located in a low-lying area of the hospital and water had started entering the premises. Chances were high of water entering the transformer, which could have led to a catastrophe. Those on ventilator were the most vulnerable. We could get the patients out timely from the facility and avert a disaster," he added.
Sushrut Trauma Hospital was established in 1998 for providing critical-care management to all acute poly-trauma trauma victims, including head injury and excluding burn, as an annexe of Lok Nayak Hospital. This is the second dedicated trauma centre in the national capital, apart from AIIMS trauma centre (JPNATC).
