NEW DELHI: A 19-year-old pregnant woman allegedly died by suicide after being constantly harassed by her husband for dowry in Delhi's Mangolpuri area.

Following the incident, the accused husband was arrested.

The deceased, identified as Laxmi, was found hanging in the rented house where she and her husband had been living.

According to reports, the 19-year-old died around 5.30pm on June 18.

"Laxmi was five months pregnant. On the day of her death, my daughter called me up and said she was beaten up again by her husband,” the victim’s mother told TOI.

She said the parents and sister of the accused were also staying in the same building.

In her police complaint, the victim's mother Anju Devi alleged that she was being tortured by the husband over dowry.

Anju said her daughter was married to Sajan at Ramnagar village of Bihar's Madhepura district in December 2020.

“Soon after the marriage, her husband started demanding dowry. He used to thrash my daughter often for not meeting the dowry demands,” she said.

The deceased’s mother alleged that the accused had been demanding Rs 5 lakh as dowry.

The postmortem was conducted on June 23 and a report in this regard is yet to come.

"The accused has been booked under sections 498A (subjecting a woman to cruelty for dowry) and 304B (

dowry death

),” police said.

According to Parvinder Singh, deputy commissioner of police (Outer), the accused is currently lodged in Tihar jail and further investigations are on.
