NEW DELHI: The

Delhi zoo

is abuzz with cheer once again after the birth of

several animals

taking place recently – including a

hippo

and

gaur

. The former has become a star attraction of sorts for visitors who make it a point to click selfies in front of its open enclosure.

Another hippo was born in the zoo in May and zoo officials say both the newborns are doing extremely well with extra care being given in terms of their diet. A baby gaur was the latest addition to the zoo, born at the end of September, while the last few months have also seen the birth of eight Shanghai deer, nine sambar deer, 14 spotted deer and six black bucks.

“A gaur was born at the zoo recently, making it the third Indian bison born in many years at the zoo,” said Renu Singh, zoo director.

Singh says extra precautions are being taken. A caretaker has been stationed outside all enclosures with newborns and a guard will also carry out night duty. The animals are also being kept warm at nights with the use of blowers and heaters where required.

“We are looking at the diet closely as winter is here. Newborns are initially kept indoors and only brought out for visitors once they are strong enough,” said Singh.

The zoo had also announced plans of “naming” animals by holding an event where children can suggest names for the newborns.
