Climate chaos: Delhi bakes, Himachal Pradesh freezes; flood in Northeast and Kerala

In Himachal Pradesh, rainfall at isolated places brought down the maximum temperature while high mountain passes of Lahaul Spiti received light snowfall on Thursday.According to the weather department, it rained in parts of Kullu, Shimla, and Kangra districts. Lahaul-Spiti coldest with the minimum temperature of 6.4o Celsius.

The Meteorological Centre in Shimla predicted rain at isolated places in mid-hills from May 31 to June 2, and in seven districts including Chamba, Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Solan from May 31 to June 5.

The IMD issued a yellow alert for heatwave for Friday, with expected thunderstorms and light rain in the evening, while temperatures in Delhi's Safdarjung are likely to range around 44 and 29 degrees Celsius for maximum and minimum respectively. Delhi experienced its hottest May in 11 years with both days and nights warmer than usual.

Delhi continued to face scorching temperatures with heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the sixth consecutive day, despite a slight dip in the mercury.The 52.9 degrees Celsius recorded at the automatic weather station in Mungeshpur is being examined. Marking the beginning of the four-month rainy season in country, IMD on Thursday announced the arrival of monsoon simultaneously over Kerala and most parts of northeast India including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and most parts of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam.The phenomenon is not very common. The last time it happened was seven years ago on May 30, 2017 when it was triggered by Cyclone Mora that formed over Bay of Bengal. This time, Cyclone Remal was the trigger.
