NEW DELHI: Soon, students of Delhi University will be given the liberty to "earn while they learn". If approved by the vice-chancellor, this first-of-its-kind plan for any Indian university would equip undergraduate and postgraduate students to work part time within the university set-up while they pursue their studies. As per existing policy, only research scholars are allowed to work on a temporary basis in Indian universities.
The new scheme proposes to allow students to work for 25 to 30 hours per month through the academic year, which starts from July.
"Besides postgraduate and research students, the plan will also allow undergraduates to work. There won’t be any compulsion on the number of hours of work and they can take up jobs as per their convenience," said N K Chaddha, director, department of adult, continuing education and extension. The part-time jobs which students can explore on campus include positions of research associate, library assistant, technician, cafeteria manager, website and database developer, counsellor, physical education trainer, swimming coach, hostel caregiver, gardener, staff vehicle driver and security personnel. Students can work on whatever time slot convenient to them."There is a need for students to understand work culture and professionalism while pursuing their academic life. At the same time, this will reduce the monetary burden on their parents and also boost their self-esteem. The university which is suffering from manpower crunch at all work areas will also be benefited by the additional workforce," added Chaddha. There there will two criteria in giving these part-time jobs: academic performance of students and their financial needs. "Details of the eligibility criteria needs to be worked out by the administration," said Chaddha. The scheme will be gradually extended to foreign students too, he added.
