NEW DELHI: A 64-year-old businessman was found murdered in northwest Delhi inside his Ashok Vihar residence on Friday morning. The deceased identified as Ram Avtaar Gupta was found with his throat slit in I-197 Ashok Vihar Phase 1. His limbs were also tied up. "We suspect it to be a case of burglary and murder as the house had been ransacked and several valuables were found missing.
We have registered a case," said a senior police officer.
Suspicion was aroused when the deceased’s Swift car was found abandoned in Bhalaswa Dairy at 10am. Police reportedly called the deceased’s elder son, Vijender Gupta, under whom the car was registered. When police and Vijender reached the deceased’s residence, they reportedly found the main gate of his residence ajar and the entire house ransacked.
The deceased owned a tyre shop in Karol Bagh. He is survived by his two sons who stayed in Punjabi Bag and three daughters. The deceased’s son had seen him last on Thursday night at 7.30pm. His wife had reportedly passed away 11 years ago. The first floor had been rented to a family of four who used to visit him every day.
Police said they suspect that someone might have killed him in a bid to carry out robbery. "We are questioning the servants and other persons doing petty jobs in the area. It is yet to be ascertained how his car reached Bhalaswa dairy. One possibility is that the robbers drove his car after committing the crime. Few suspects have been rounded up for questioning," said a senior police officer.
The cops added that they were questioning family members to ascertain any other motive behind the crime. The role of an insider in the crime cannot be ruled out, say officials.
