NEW DELHI: Two children, Aakash (7) and Sakshi (14), died in a fire that broke out in their rented home in East Punjabi Bagh on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 8.20pm in the Manohar Park area of Delhi.
According to the Delhi Police, the fire started when Savita (34), the children's mother, was cooking in the kitchen and a nearby cloth caught fire. While Savita and her 11-year-old daughter Minakshi managed to escape, Aakash and Sakshi were trapped inside. Despite efforts from the landlord's son and other tenants to rescue the children, both succumbed to severe burns. They were rushed to Acharya Bhikshu Hospital in Moti Nagar, where doctors declared them dead due to 100% burns.
The children's father, Lal Bahadur (40), was working as a private security guard at the time of the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Delhi Police.
In a separate fire-related incident, a blaze broke out at Makkar Hospital in the Laxmi Nagar area around 11:42 PM on Sunday. The fire, originating from a bed and window air conditioner, was quickly brought under control by four fire tenders. No casualties or injuries were reported.
