Ambedkar statue installed at Delhi University campus, removed a day later
NEW DELHI: The installation and subsequent removal of a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar on Delhi University's North Campus has sparked a fresh controversy.
The statue, unveiled on Monday by Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president Tushar Dedha near the union office on Chhatra Marg, was missing the following day. "Delhi govt had it removed. At 4 am, the SDM and officials of PWD, along with police, arrived and took the statue away," Dedha said.
Dedha alleged that they had secured permission from MCD. "The deputy chairman of MCD was present at the unveiling. Delhi govt does not want to respect Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, which is why they have done this. We met the DU vice-chancellor and submitted a memorandum," he said.
MCD officials have denied the charges. "MCD did not grant permission for this installation as PWD is the landowning authority. We got a letter from the DUSU president but referred it to PWD," an MCD official said. Sources said the councillor who attended the unveiling was also unable to clarify the permission status.
MCD's letter referring the matter to PWD says: "It is to inform you the road named as Chhatra Marg on which permission regarding installation of statue is being sought falls under the jurisdiction of PWD. You are, therefore, requested to take necessary action at your end."
Despite repeated attempts, no official from PWD was available for comment.
DCP (north) clarified that police presence at the spot in the early hours of Tuesday was solely to maintain law and order and prevent any disturbances.
The DU administration said the institution had no involvement in the matter. "We can neither grant permission nor prevent any action as the land belongs to PWD," DU proctor Rajni Abbi said. A DU official said the area is a PWD green zone.
The ABVP-led DUSU has submitted a memorandum to DU VC Yogesh Singh, demanding the reinstallation of the statue and the establishment of a Samvidhan Park on campus. The union said the removal of the statue has hurt the sentiments of the student community.
