FARIDABAD: Three alleged bookies were caught redhanded by Faridabad police while accepting bets during the
IPL match between Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings on Monday.
More than a hundred cellphones used to accept bets were seized. Police also seized a register containing the names of people who had put down money as bets.
Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Investigating Agency (CIA) team of Faridabad police raided House No B 838 (II Floor) at Greenfield Colony in Surajkund and arrested the bookies, identified as Naveen Sharma, Dharminder and Manoj Kumar.
All the accused are from Old Faridabad.
Speaking to Times City, DCP (NIT) Parveen Kumar Mehta said the three accused were arrested on charges under sections 420, 468, 471 and 120B of the IPC along with 13 (A) of the Gambling Act.
Police would earlier book bookies under the Gambling Act, under which the accused were released on payment of a Rs 500 fine, after pleading guilty. But this time, keeping in mind the large number of cellphones used in the betting operation which probably meant a large number of betters, police said it has become necessary for them to seek exemplary penalties for the accused. They were therefore booked under various sections of the IPC as well as of the Gambling Act, said DCP Mehta.
Police intend to also book the house owner for not getting the antecedents of the accused verified before renting out the second floor of his house to them.
During interrogation, police found that the accused had links with a Delhi-based bookie, Naresh, who is the kingpin of the entire racket.
The accused were produced before a magistrate who remanded Naveen in police custody and sent the other accused to jail.
