NEW DELHI: The south district police have arrested a 25-year-old man for the murder of an elderly woman on August 21 in Vasant Kunj. DCP (south) H G S Dhaliwal claimed the deceased, Shanti Devi, had tried to resist the robbers which led to her murder.
The robbed gold chain of the deceased has been recovered from the accused along with a knife which was used in the crime.
"We received information about murder of an old woman in Arjun Camp, near Mahipalpur. To track the criminals, sources were deployed in the area and raids were conducted. On a tip off, accused Dharmender was apprehended on August 22 evening,'' said the DCP.
During sustained interrogation, it was revealed that accused owns a cycle repair shop in Hardoi, UP. "Dharmender's father wanted to contest election from the locality. With an excuse of preparing voter ID of Shanti Devi and her family, Dharmender, along with co-accused Nasim, came to Delhi and met Shanti Devi and her sons. They also took photographs of her family members,'' DCP added.
"Deceased, Shanti Devi, owned a house and seven shops adjacent to Dharmender's. She had shifted to Delhi with her family, but was living separately in Arjun Camp. After learning that Shanti Devi was living alone, the accused planned a robbery along with his aide, Nasim.
On the fateful night, both Dharmender and Nasim met Shanti Devi and stayed at her house. Around midnight, both started searching the house, but found nothing valuable. Hearing voices, the victim woke up from sleep. When she tried to resist them, Nasim gagged her, while Dharmender brought a kitchen knife and slashed the victim's neck and both fled with her gold chain,'' said the DCP.
