Bageshwar: Panic spread in the Kapkot area of Bageshwar after a human skeleton was discovered inside the ruins of an under-construction building near the Saryu river, close to an SBI branch. Police later identified the remains as Vinod Thapa (55), a man of Nepali origin who had been missing for nearly seven months.
Locals said three teenagers from Kapkot had gone out on Saturday night to shoot a horror video and entered the abandoned structure near the river. Inside, they found a skeleton lying on a charpoy. In the video, the boys are heard saying that someone might have died there while sleeping and that they were frightened by the discovery.
Instead of informing authorities, the teenagers uploaded the video on Instagram and returned home. The clip soon circulated widely online and came to the attention of the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU), which alerted Kapkot police.
A police team reached the spot and recovered the skeletal remains. Officials said the body had decomposed completely. During preliminary inquiries, locals identified the deceased as Vinod Thapa and told police that he had gone missing around seven months ago after being removed from his job at a temple in the area.
Kapkot circle officer Manish Sharma said, "The remains were sent for post-mortem after completing legal formalities. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Thapa's death."
