After seeing his colleague collapse on the floor, the peon, Rajesh Verma, ran outside to escape the attack. Verma was barely 100 metres from the main door when he was gunned down.
The branch has just four personnel and while three were involved in the tragedy, the manager was away at the time of the incident.
The guard fled the crime scene but was arrested from near his house in Manar Talla in a few hours by a joint team of police and special operations group (SOG). A single bore rifle used in the crime has also been recovered.
Dhirendra Gunjyal, superintendent of police (Champawat), told TOI, “The guard has confessed to killing Bisht (35) and Verma (40), both residents of Lohaghat. He said that he was angry after an argument with both of them.” The SP added that the accused has not revealed what led to the argument yet.
Gunjyal said that the accused was an alcoholic and had got the job of a security guard at the bank five years ago. He has been booked under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC. (With inputs from Prem Punetha)
