Haridwar: A property was shot at during a clash after a land dispute between two groups turned violent when a revenue team arrived for land measurement at Panjanhedi village under Kankhal police station of Haridwar district on Wednesday.
Sachin Chauhan (30) was taken to a higher medical centre, where his condition is stated to be stable. Sachin is the brother of BJP functionary and zila panchayat vice-president Amit Chauhan, who was also present at the clash site.
Police said the revenue team had reached the village following complaints by local activist Atul Chauhan, who accused Amit Chauhan of illegally grabbing govt land and converting agricultural plots into residential colonies. Tensions escalated during the verification process, leading to a clash between the two sides.
During the scuffle, Atul Chauhan allegedly opened fire with his licensed pistol, injuring Sachin. Another man, Krishnapal, sustained a minor injury to his hand.
SP (City) Abhay Singh said a case was being registered.
Meanwhile, social organisation Matri Sadan Ashram extended support to Atul Chauhan and submitted a written complaint accusing Amit Chauhan and others of attacking him. Ashram representatives claimed Atul Chauhan acted in self-defence after he was assaulted. They alleged police inaction despite prior requests for protection.
Police said all versions were being examined as part of the probe.
