DEHRADUN: The project team of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (

NMCG

) and the

Wildlife Institute of India

(WII) celebrated the World Crocodile Day recently at

Dehradun Zoo

, earlier known as

Malsi Deer Park

. As many as 55 participants, including students and faculty from colleges in Dehradun, participated in the event on June 17.

According to the organizing team of the NMCG-WII project ‘

Biodiversity Conservation

and Ganga Rejuvenation’, colleges in Dehradun participated in a quiz competition on the theme ‘The Crocodile: Vahana of Vibrant Ganga’ that aimed to sensitize the students on the ecological significance, habitat and distribution of crocodiles in Ganga river and related conservation issues. The Ganga provides habitat for three species of endangered crocodile, including one which is critically endangered.

The quiz had four rounds and in the qualifying round, participants were asked questions on classification, scientific and common names of crocodiles. The other rounds had questions on crocodile population worldwide and in India, their distribution status, national parks with crocodiles, morphology, physiology and reproduction of the species.
