HARIDWAR: A 50-year-old woman was murdered by her son-in-law on Sunday late night. After committing the crime, the accused man called the police and surrendered.

According to police, the accused was drunk at the time of crime and after a minor dispute with his wife, he strangled her mother to death. The couple is from Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh and lives in a rented accommodation in Mahadevpuram colony under SIDCUL police station here.

The victim has been identified as Basanti Devi. The accused Surendra Kumar is a habitual drinker and reached home drunk from a party on Sunday night. His wife did not permit him to enter the house after which he reached his mother-in-law's house in Rawali Mahdood where he murdered Basanti Devi by strangulating her.

SHO SIDCUL police station Ramesh Talwar told TOI, "After committing the crime, he reached the police station and surrendered. A case has been registered against him under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal code."
