Rudrapur: A 33-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for the murder of his elderly aunt in Khatima, solving the case within 72 hours of the crime, Udham Singh Nagar SSP Ajay Ganpati said.
The case came to light late on Feb 18 when police received information that 65-year-old Janaki Chand was lying in a pool of blood inside her house at Devbhoomi Dharmshala Colony on Sitarganj Road. Police teams rushed to the spot, and forensic experts from the field unit and the RFSL Kumaon unit collected fingerprints and other evidence. An FIR was registered on the complaint of the victim's son, Prem Chand, an Army personnel posted in Punjab.

Multiple teams were formed to investigate the case. Police examined footage from 60–70 CCTV cameras and questioned residents in the area. Suspicion fell on the victim's nephew, Ravi Chand, a resident of Adarsh Colony, Khatima.
Ravi was arrested from the Jhankat area. During interrogation, he confessed to killing his aunt on Feb 17 evening after arriving from Nangal in Haryana, where he worked as a labourer. He allegedly strangled her with a muffler to steal cash and fled after locking the house from outside. Police said recovery of stolen property is underway.
