Police registered a case of fraud against unidentified persons for allegedly duping a man of Rs 4.03 lakh.

The accused posed as policemen and had offered to settle a "case registered against the victim".

According to the police, the victim Abhishek Gupta, is a trader and resident of Nehru Colony.

Sub-inspector Kushal Gupta who is probing the case, said that Abhishek Gupta lodged the complaint on Tuesday evening, alleging that the accused contacted him a few months ago.

"The accused, while speaking to Abhishek Gupta over the phone, told him that a case has been registered against him at the police station for committing a fraud. They then offered to settle the case in lieu of the aforementioned money," said sub-inspector Gupta.

"Scared and panicked, Gupta agreed to their demand and paid the money on several occasions, without verifying their claim from the police. A case has been registered against the unidentified accused and a probe is on to nab them," the police said.
