Man caught converting old currency with new one

DEHRADUN: The Dehradun police on late Monday night caught a person from a city hotel and found Rs 3.96 lakh in Rs 2,000 currency from his possession.
After the initial round of questioning, the man was handed over to the Income Tax department team along with the new currency notes on Tuesday.
A resident of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Surjeet Kumar worked as electrician and had new currency notes worth Rs 4 lakh with him.
According to the information collected by the police team, Kumar called to people to different hotels and changed the old currency denomination notes with the new ones.
For the illegal activity, he took a commission in the range of 30 per cent to 50 per cent.
"On being questioned about the source of the money, he was unable to give any satisfactory answer. At the same time, the possession of new currency note of a worth close to Rs 4 lakh is surprising itself," SSP Dehradun Sadanand Date told TOI. He pointed out that the police team is trying to collect the list of people who got the currency notes exchanged from him.
"Our teams are alert on the issue and will act strongly against any such effort to illegally change the old currency notes," added the senior police officer.
