Kumaon, Naga Regiments’ modern journey captured in new volume

BAGESHWAR: A comprehensive account of the post-Independence journey of one of the Indian Army’s most decorated infantry regiments was unveiled on Monday with the release of “Valour Triumphs II: A Modern History of Kumaon and Naga Regiment” at Diwan Singh Hall in Ranikhet.
The book was released by Lt Gen R C Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, who is also the outgoing Colonel of the Kumaon and Naga Regiment and Kumaon Scouts. The event was attended by senior military officials, including Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, the incumbent Colonel of the Regiment.
Co-authored by Brig Sanjay Yadav, centre commandant of the Kumaon Regimental Centre (KRC), Ranikhet, and historian Prof Anil K Joshi, the volume serves as a sequel to “Valour Triumphs: A History of the Kumaon Regiment” by Major K C Praval, first published in 1976. The new book captures the regiment’s evolution and achievements over the past five decades.
Spread across 17 chapters, with an appendix, the book goes beyond a chronological account of events, presenting a narrative of courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment that defines the regiment. It opens with a portrayal of the Kumaon region, highlighting how its rugged terrain, cultural richness, and simple way of life have shaped generations of resilient soldiers.
A dedicated section traces the history and transformation of the Kumaon Regimental Centre, underscoring its role as the custodian of regimental traditions while adapting to modern military needs. The book also documents the raising of new battalions, including 18 Kumaon, 19 Kumaon, 20 Kumaon, and the Kumaon Scouts.
Detailed accounts of key military operations, including Orchid, Hifazat, Bajrang, Rhino, Bluestar, and Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, highlight the regiment’s operational versatility across varied terrains. The narrative also covers critical phases such as the Kargil conflict (Operation Vijay), Operation Parakram, and disaster relief efforts during floods and the Malpa landslide.
Recent operations such as Snow Leopard and Sindoor, along with high-altitude deployments like Operation Meghdoot, and counter-insurgency engagements in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, are also extensively documented. The book further highlights contributions to UN peacekeeping missions and the role of Rashtriya Rifles.
In addition, it features profiles of decorated personnel, brief accounts of affiliated units, and a detailed record of adventure and sports achievements, along with sketches of former Colonels of the Regiment and KRC Commandants.
“This book is not merely a record of battles and timelines, but a tribute to the spirit of the Kumaon soldier — shaped by the land, strengthened by tradition, and tested in the harshest of circumstances. Through these pages, we have attempted to capture a living legacy that continues to inspire generations,” said Prof Anil K Joshi.
Authors and military officials expressed hope that the publication will not only preserve the regiment’s rich legacy but also inspire the youth of Kumaon to join the Indian Army.
