DEHRADUN: A 35-year-old martial arts trainer from Kerala on a trek to Dronagiri area in Garhwal's Chamoli district, died due to suspected respiratory failure while attempting to climb Garuda Peak at 6,268m on Friday.
Amal Mohan, a resident of Idukki in Kerala, was part of a group of four trekkers who set out for the Bagini Glacier in Dronagiri region on Sept 22. District authorities said Amal began experiencing breathing difficulties while ascending the Garuda Peak. Subsequently, his condition worsened which led to his death.
His body was airlifted from Dronagiri village to Jyotirmath (formerly know as Joshimath) for a post-mortem examination, before being sent to Rishikesh for embalming. The body was later flown back to Kerala for the last rites. It was not immediately confirmed what the exact cause of death was.
Vishnu Mohan, a member of the trekking group, added that Amal had been working as a freelance martial arts trainer for children in his hometown after leaving his previous job at a global consultancy firm in Kochi three years ago.
