HALDWANI: In a

rare medical surgery

, a team of doctors at a private hospital in

Haldwani rejoined the hand of a woman

which was severed from the wrist.

The surgery which lasted for almost 11 hours was performed on 40-year-old Urmila Rai, a

resident of Dineshpur in Udham Singh Nagar

, who had her hand chopped off by a machine while working at a factory in

SIDCUL in Rudrapur

.

Her co-workers took her to a nearby hospital from where she was referred to Haldwani. The family preserved the hand in a polythene bag after the incident on September 14. At the Haldwani hospital, doctors preserved the hand in a deep freezer after providing first aid to the victim.

A team of six doctors, including an

anaesthesia expert

,

orthopaedic surgeon

, neurosurgeon and a physician then got to work.

Prashant Moon, plastic surgeon, who was part of the team, said, “We were able to reattach the hand with the body and the patient is recovering slowly. We have kept her under observation and will perform more surgeries if required.”

J S, Khurana, orthopaedic surgeon and owner of the hospital, told TOI, “The vascular system of the patient has started working after the surgery but we will have to conduct a few more surgeries for the bone to align.”

Prashant Rai, husband of the patient, said, “We were traumatised after the incident but the team of doctors acted as saviours. I am grateful to them.”
