Mussoorie: Tine Mena, who became the first woman from Northeast to scale Mount Everest, was felicitated at the
Mussoorie
Mountain Festival (MMF) on Friday.
Tine’s inspirational journey from a porter in the Indian Army to a mountaineer was narrated by Shikha Tripathi, who wrote a children’s book on Tina.
Speaking to mediapersons, Tine, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh and had scaled the world’s highest peak in 2011, said that to achieve success, one has to choose the right path.
“It is important to choose the right path in order to achieve success. Choosing the right path also enhances ones self-confidence,” Tine said.
Recalling the thoughts that transpired in her mind while climbing Everest, Tine said, “As I was nearing the summit, I had very little food. At one point, I felt I may not be able to go further. But strong determination and faith in God helped me to overcome the challenges.”
Another highlight of the event was mountaineer Kuntal Joisher, also an Everester.
Joisher, who is the first mountaineer to climb Mount Everest completely on a plant-based diet, said that he had ‘found his own Everest’ in his journey of climbing Mt Everest and then Mt Lhotse.
Uttarakhand’s young budding mountaineer Prerna Dangi was yet another speaker who narrated her journey in the realm of mountaineering.
A demonstration on wilderness medical emergency response was also conducted by the team of Hanifl Centre of Woodstock School.
MMF seeks to celebrate Himalayan culture, natural history and exploration. This year’s theme of the three-day festival which began on March 7, is ‘Health and risk management for outdoor programmes in the Himalayas’.
