BAGESHWAR/DEHRADUN: In a development that has sparked controversy, police apprehended five individuals, including Bobby Panwar, the president of Uttarakhand Unemployed Association.

The police's actions ahead of the Bageshwar bypoll on September 5 met with strong objections from various organisations, calling it a heavy-handed approach. The police took Panwar into custody on Friday near Numaishkhet.

Along with Panwar, four other persons were also arrested. The charges were filed under IPC sections 147, 188, 186, and 171G.

Akshay Prahlad Konde, superintendent of police, said a case had already been registered against Panwar in Dehradun, and he is currently out on bail. "The court's instructions restricted Panwar's activities to a specific location in Dehradun while forbidding engagement elsewhere," Konde said. Konde said the intention behind the group's presence in Bageshwar was to influence the bypoll. Intelligence inputs indicated the group intended to incite unrest, a notion corroborated by documents found in their possession, he said.

However, late on Friday evening, all five arrested persons were released on bail.
