Dehradun: Uttarakhand education department, in collaboration with Sampark Foundation, held the ‘AI for Education Impact’ Uttarakhand State Action Dialogue in Dehradun on Friday. The focus of the discussion was on how to improve learning outcomes with technology “by supporting teachers’ skills without replacing them”.
The summit brought together senior state leaders, AI and policy experts, and representatives from institutions such as IIT Roorkee, IIM Kashipur, NIC, UTU and Doon University, along with practitioners working in govt schools.
Uttarakhand governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh said, “AI is becoming integral to how we learn and work. If introduced carefully, it can help build more responsive education systems and prepare students for the future.”
Education secretary Ravinath Raman said, “We should adopt a practical and scalable approach designed around teacher and student needs and use it to guide better planning and decision-making in classrooms.”
Two panel discussions were held on themes including ‘classroom impact’, ‘system-level decisions’, ‘teachers first in the AI era’, and ‘augmenting not replacing the classroom’.
Experts also warned that AI can be a “double-edged sword” and said instead of being handed over to students directly, it should pass through the teachers first. They spoke about how AI tools can help students who face geographical and connectivity challenges in hilly states like Uttarakhand.
Sampark Foundation, founded by Uttarakhand-based Anupama and Vineet Nayar, is investing Rs 36 crore in the state for AI-based learning and smart classrooms. “The foundation has reached 13 lakh children and trained over 90,000 teachers across 16,000 govt schools,” said Vineet. “We have set up 4,300 smart classrooms in the region and plan to add 5,000 more.”
Organisers said the foundation’s AI based platform will help district, block and school-level education leaders track teaching data, monitor classroom engagement and flag early signs of lagging schools.
