Rudrapur: An elderly woman allegedly died during a police raid in Siddha village, Nanakmatta, on Saturday, triggering protests as angry villagers placed her body outside the police station and demanded action against the personnel involved.
Officials said the police had reached the house of one Kuldeep Singh in the afternoon to arrest him in connection with a case of eloping with a minor girl earlier this week. During the raid, a scuffle broke out between the police and family members, during which Singh's 65-year-old relative, Sukhdev Kaur, allegedly fell.
Family members accused the police of forcibly entering the house without a warrant and misbehaving with them. They alleged that the police pushed Kaur during the altercation, leading to her death. "The cops pushed her, causing her to fall. She died on the spot," a family member alleged.
Police denied the allegations. "No misbehaviour took place. They acted within the ambit of law," an officer said. SSP Ajay Ganpati said, "Inquiry has been ordered. Strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty." He added an ASP has been sent to assess the situation.
