Haridwar: A sessions court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his live-in partner in the SIDCUL area during the Covid period in 2020. The court also awarded five years' imprisonment to a woman for destroying evidence in the case.

Rohit Kumar (30), a resident of Nawada in Bihar, was living with Sonam alias Varsha (28) of Gwalior in a rented room in SIDCUL, where both worked at a company. Co-accused Manju Singh (26), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, also stayed in the same house.

An argument allegedly broke out between Rohit and Sonam over his relationship with Manju, following which Rohit strangled Sonam to death. He later packed her body in a suitcase and fled. Acting on complaints of a foul smell, police recovered the body and arrested the accused.
Investigation officer Lakhpat Singh Butola said the post-mortem confirmed death by strangulation. Rohit was later arrested from Ghaziabad, while Manju was caught five days after the incident.
The prosecution examined 12 witnesses. Additional sessions judge Rakesh Kumar Singh held Rohit guilty of murder and awarded him life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 25,000, while Manju was convicted for destruction of evidence and sentenced to five years in prison with a fine Rs 5,000.
