ROORKEE
: Police on Sunday arrested a 28-year-old taxi driver for allegedly killing his wife and dumping her body in a canal. Official said that on January 20, Atul
Singh
had come to
Gangnahar
police station and got a complaint registered regarding his missing wife
Ishika Singh (36).
“However, he has now admitted to have killed her claiming that she was engaged in prostitution,” Roorkee circle officer Swapan Kishore Singh said. He added that the accused has further confessed that he committed the crime for his ‘family’s honour’.
According to officials,
Atul
and
Ishika
were living with their two sons in a rented house in
Nand Vihar
locality. “In his complaint, the accused had claimed that his wife went missing on January 16. However, when we began investigating the case, we found that the couple had left together in a car on that day. On probing the matter further, we found out that on January 16, the accused took his wife out on the pretext of taking her to her parents’ house in Khatauli, Muzaffarnagar. However, on the way, he offered her a dink laced with sedatives. Soon after she passed out, he strangled her to death by using his belt and later threw her body into Gangnahar canal on
Badsu
road in Khatauli,” said the circle officer.
The accused has further told police that he got married to Ishika against the will of their families eight years ago. “Since Ishika did not belong to his caste, was elder to him and was a habitual drinker, their families opposed the wedding. But as time passed, things began to settle down. According to Atul, one day, he caught his wife in a compromising position with two men. He said he decided to kill her that day,” said Swapan Kishore Singh.
