SCB doctors remove 4.5-inch needle from man’s heart

Cuttack: A rare surgery was conducted by doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital here, successfully removing a 4.5-inch needle from the heart of a 31-year-old man.The condition of the patient, Nibash Sharma, a resident of the VSS Nagar area in Bhubaneswar, is stated to be stable following the rare surgery. A needle pierced Sharma’s chest while he was sleeping at home. The needle got stuck on the left side of his heart leading to severe pain.Unable to bear the pain, Nibash visited Capital Hospital and Bhubaneswar AIIMS where the surgery could not be conducted. Later, he was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital.The patient was admitted to SCB on Saturday after diagnosis. After cardiothoracic and vascular surgery department HOD Dr Manoj Patnaik examined the patient, a 12-member team of doctors conducted the surgery.“We performed a rare, three-and-a-half-hour surgery on Sunday. We successfully removed a 4.5-inch needle from the patient’s heart,” said Dr Patnaik said.“As the needle stuck to the left vessel of the heart, it was a delicate and complicated surgery, which was conducted smoothly with co-ordination of all doctors,” added Dr Patnaik.Nibash told TOI, “It’s a new life for me. The pain was unbearable. I wouldn’t have survived if I weren’t taken to SCB at the right time. I am really thankful to the doctors of SCB who have given me a new life.
