HC calls for more robust handling of cybercrime cases

Cuttack: The Orissa high court has expressed concern with the cybercrimes cases and said they need to be tackled in a more effective and efficient manner.Justice Chittaranjan Dash sounded the note of caution on Tuesday while disposing of a petition filed by Biswajit Lenka, a scientist with the Geological Survey of India, seeking intervention against inaction by the cybercrime police station (VSS Nagar, Bhubaneswar) regarding defamatory write-ups and articles about him appearing online. The petition alleged the investigating agency of remaining silent and allowing the mischief mongers to continue posting offensive remarks against Lenka.Expressing displeasure over the tardy progress in the case, Justice Dash said awareness programmes and other activities purportedly taken up to make the people aware about cybercrimes cases “would be a futile effort” if the investigating agencies are not aware of their duties.Justice Dash expressed ‘utter surprise’ that though the govt has a number of robust policies to tackle cybercrime cases, “the investigating agencies, while being confronted with the cases, are adopting a lackadaisical attitude.”Justice Dash also directed the inspector in-charge, cybercrime police station, Bhubaneswar, to make sure the investigation in the case is completed within a reasonable period and to apprehend the accused person(s) irrespective of their place or position, in the event sufficient evidence is made out against them.

TMC MP files case with NHRC for investigation into farmer's death at Haryana border

TMC MP Saket Gokhale filed a case with NHRC, seeking investigation into farmer Subhkaran Singh's death and alleged firing by Haryana Police. Gokhale urged NHRC to send a fact-finding team to Khanauri border. The farmers suspended their protest march to Delhi for two days. Singh sustained a bullet wound during the clash.
