CUTTACK: With the sale of sweets surging across the state ahead of Durga puja, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) conducted raids on sweet shops here on Thursday. During the civic body's drive, two big sweet shops on Link Road were sealed for flouting food safety norms.

Stale food was also seized from the shops. Raids were also conducted at Dolamundai and Kalyan Nagar areas.

"We came to know from the local residents' complaints that some branded sweet shops were flouting the food safety norms. Accordingly, we conducted raids on 10 big shops. They were also issued notices to obey the food safety norms," said CMC heath officer Satyabrata Mohapatra.

"A total of 50-kg stale food has been seized from the shops and destroyed. The drive will continue till Dussehra," he added.

There are altogether 121 sweet shops in Cuttack. "Sweets are an integral part of the upcoming festivals like Durga Puja and Dussehra. Therefore, the drive was an imperative," added Mohapatra.
