Youths throw egg at schoolgirl, arrested

Coimbatore: Three youths and a minor boy were arrested on Tuesday for hurling an egg at a Class X girl student while celebrating the birthday of one of their friends at Kuniyamuthur here on Monday night.According to the Kuniyamuthur police, the incident took place when the 15-year-old girl from the same locality was returning home from a grocery shop around 9.30pm on Monday.“While she was walking through Vinayagar Temple Street, around 12 youths in the locality were celebrating the birthday of one of their gang members. They were throwing eggs at each other, as part of the celebrations. One of the eggs fell on the schoolgirl. When the girl questioned the youths, they threatened her with dire consequences,” a police officer, who didn’t want to be named, said. The girl narrated the entire incident to her parents, who alerted the Kuniyamuthur police. A police team immediately reached the spot and picked up the 12 youths.Based on the minor girl’s complaint, the Kuniyamuthur police registered a case against three youths - Abhishek, 21, Sanjeev, 19, and Santhosh, 20 - and a 16-year-old boy under sections 294(b), 341 and 352 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and arrested them on Tuesday. The remaining youths were let off.“Three of the arrested were involved in robbery and assault cases in the city earlier,” the officer said. Further investigation in the case is on.
