Work begins to relocate foot overbridge at Kuniyamuthur

Coimbatore: As the iron foot overbridge on Palakkad Main Road at Kuniyamuthur remains unused, the city corporation, last week, began the works to relocate it some 500m away near a government higher secondary school. The civic body installed the overbridge at a cost of 1.25 crore in 2019.A corporation official said pedestrians, however, were not using the bridge and found it easy to jaywalk through a gap near a traffic signal at the spot.Deputy mayor R Vetriselvan, accompained by a few councillors, met corporation commissioner M Prathap recently and urged him to relocate the bridge. “So, it was decided to move the bridge near the school so that students can cross the road safely. Besides, the proposed location is also near to the rear entrance of the Kurichi lake, where works under the smart city mission are going on. The bridge would be relocated at a cost of 36.5 lakh. The works would be completed in two months,” the official said. TNN
