COIMBATORE: The Podanur police in Coimbatore city on Friday registered a case against a woman from Assam for allegedly beating and harassing a 10-year-old girl.
The arrested woman has been identified as R Sona of Dhemaji in Assam, who was staying in a rented house near Podanur and working at a restaurant.
A few months ago, she called her relative to Coimbatore for work. The relative arrived with her 10-year-old daughter and stayed with Sona. The girl’s mother joined for work at the restaurant.
Police said Sona had frequently assaulted and harassed the child at home. When the mother tried to intervene, Sona allegedly assaulted her too. Neighbours noticed the abuse and questioned Sona, but it reportedly continued.
Neighbours alerted the Coimbatore child welfare office. Child welfare officer Rifana Aferin visited the house and conducted an inquiry with the girl and her mother, who confirmed the abuse.
Based on a complaint filed by Aferin, the Podanur police registered a case against Sona for assault and torture. The mother and the daughter were moved to a govt-run shelter.
