Krishnagiri: Police arrested seven people after a street brawl claimed a man’s life near Uthakarai in the district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as B Munusamy, 60, of Ottampatty near Uthankarai. He was a daily wage labourer.
Around 9.30am on Sunday, one of Munusamy’s neighbours K Nagaraj, 52, was watering plants in his house when the former questioned him for using drinking water for the plants.
On hearing this, Nagaraj, his sons Marimuthu, 23, Ilayaraja, 30, Arun Pandiyan, 29, relatives Murugan, 45, Velu, 39, Prabhakaran, 22, wife Chinnapappa, 48, and Saroja, 44, attacked Munusamy with wooden logs.
Munusamy’s son Govindasamy, 29, who came to rescue his father, was also thrashed.
Both sustained severe injuries and admitted at the government hospital at Uthankarai, a police officer said.
On Monday morning, Munusamy succumbed to his head injuries. Munusamy’s another son Kumar, 29, lodged a complaint with the Uthankarai police station based on which they registered a case. Police arrested Marimuthu, Ilayaraja, Arun Pandiyan, Nagaraj, Murugan, Velu and Prabhakaran.
All the seven accused were lodged at the Salem central prison under judicial custody on Monday evening.
Similarly, Nagaraj’s son Marimuthu lodged a complaint alleging he and his family members sustained injuries after Munusamy’s sons attacked them with wooden logs. Police have registered a case against Munusamy’s son Kumar and his relatives Venkatraman, 30, Sivanesan, 35 and Chakrapani, 29.
