Stop pro-CAA protest: DMK, alliance parties
Coimbatore: While protests against and for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 continue in the city, DMK and alliance parties petitioned city police commissioner Sumit Sharan on Tuesday, wanting to know why police on Monday allowed several Hindu outfits to conduct a pro-CAA event at Gandhipuram, where no protests were allowed in the past.
The petitioners were led by Singanallur constituency DMK MLA N Karthik, senior leader Pongalur N Palanisamy, Congress leader Mayura Jayakumar, MDMK’s Nandagopal, CPM’s Padmanaban, former CPI MLA Arumugam, VCK leader Ilakkiyan and TPDK general secretary Ku Ramakrishnan.

Karthik said that police used to deny permission to conduct protest at Gandhipuram even for highlighting civic issues. “But BJP, Hindu Munnani and other outfits staged a pro-CAA dharna at Gandhipuram. If police fail to stop it, DMK and alliance parties would stage a protest,” he said.
The group petitioned collector K Rajamani in the evening with the same demand. “Muslims have been conducting protests against CAA for more than 10 days. So, Hindu outfit members have launched a protest against Muslims at Gandhipuram,” Karthik said.
Hindu Munnani had launched an indefinite pro-CAA event near Hotel Tamil Nadu on Dr Nanjappa Road on Monday evening.
