L Muruganantham of Muthu Nagar on the Kottapulipalayam road was hacked by an armed gang near Dharapuram bus stand on July 28. Soon after the murder, a six-member gang, including Muruganantham's father Lingusamy's younger brother Dhandapani,60, surrendered before the deputy superintendent of police, Dharapuram sub-division.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Muruganantham had filed a petition against a private school in Dharapuram, owned by Dhandapani, for allegedly constructing an illegal fourth floor. The court ordered the demolition of the fourth floor. To avenge this, Dhandapani decided to murder him. On July 28, when Muruganantham was standing near the school, the gang hacked him to death.
