COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore rural police on Friday retrieved the skeletal remains of a man from a well at Malumichampatti in the district. The murder came to light on Thursday after two men -- identified as Murugaperumal, 26 and Balamurugan, 45 -- surrendered before the Chettipalayam police in Coimbatore district and confessed to having murdered their friend in Chennai and dumping the body at Malumichampatti in Coimbatore district.
They stated that Murugaperumal and a few others had murdered their friend Jayaraman in a drunken brawl and dropped the dead body in a well near Malumichampatti with the help of Balamurugan.
The Chettipalayam police informed Karumathampatti subdivision deputy superintendent of police Thangamaran about the incident. Officers reached the station and conducted an inquiry with the duo.
According to police sources, Balamurugan of Nanguneri in Tirunelveli befriended Murugaperumal of Palayamkottai while he was lodged in the Palayamkottai Central Prison in connection with a theft case.
A few months ago, Murugaperumal, along with a few others in Chennai, murdered Jayaraman. They found it hard to dispose of the body in Chennai. Murugaperumal sought Balamurugan’s help, who was staying with his father near Malumichampatti in Coimbatore district. As per Balamurugan’s plan, Murugaperumal brought the body in a car to Coimbatore district and dropped it in a 40-foot-deep well near Malumichampatti.
Following their statement, the skeletal remains of the deceased Jayaraman were retrieved from the well near Malumichampatti.
Police started a hunt for the others involved in the murder. The reason for the murder and the details about the deceased are yet to be known as the investigation is under way.
