COIMBATORE: A man was beaten to death by two of his neighbours during a quarrel near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district on Thursday night.
The deceased man has been identified as S Nagaraj, 49, of Gandhi Square in Arivoli Nagar. The Madukkarai police arrested his neighbours -- M Nagaraj, 32, and the latter’s brother M Alagaraja, 30 -- on charges of murdering him.
It all started after a quarrel erupted between Alagaraja’s wife and his mother. Alagaraja’s mother called her elder son, M Nagaraj, who arrived there and questioned Alagaraja’s wife, leading to a heated argument.
Hearing the commotion, their neighbour S Nagaraj’s wife, Vijayalakshmi, intervened to calm down the situation. M Nagaraj objected to Vijayalakshmi’s intervention and allegedly assaulted her. S Nagaraj confronted M Nagaraj, and an altercation followed.
M Nagaraj picked up a log and struck his neighbour on the head while Alagaraja punched him on his chest. The victim suffered a bleeding head injury and collapsed. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The arrested men have been remanded in judicial custody.
