COIMBATORE: A 57-year-old tribal man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at the Thadagam reserve forest in Periyanaickenpalayam forest range on Sunday.

The deceased was N Maruthan from the Senguttai tribal settlement.

"Around 6.15pm on Sunday, we received an alert that Maruthan had gone into forest in search of missing cattle, but did not return. We searched close to the forest borders, but unable to venture inside as it was already dark. We again started the search in the morning and found his dead body around 6.45am," said M Saravanan, range officer, Periyanaickenpalayam forest range.

After being alerted, the Karamadai police reached the spot and sent the body to the Mettupalayam government hospital for postmortem.

The forest department handed over 50,000 to Maruthan's family members as an immediate relief fund.

Police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.
