COIMBATORE: More than 30 people from Avarampalayam and surrounding areas gathered at the office of the city police commissioner on Monday to lodge a complaint against a private chit fund operator, who allegedly cheated them of 4 crore.

K Dhanusri of Avarampalayam, a domestic help, said she had invested 50,000 in Sri Amman Chit Funds at Duraisamy Layout at Avarampalayam two years ago. “The chit fund period was completed three months ago. Fund operator K Saravanakumaravelu, 53, of Avarampalayam, had promised to give me the money soon, but closed the office on August 23 and went into hiding with his family,” she said.

Saravanakumaravelu was working as an apprentice in a private firm and later drove an autorickshaw, said P Vijayakumar, 63, of VG Compound at Elango Nagar, who lost 35 lakh. “A few years ago, he requested me to invest in his new venture. He promised to give 1.30 to 2 on every 100 investment. I deposited 35 lakh in various instalments and received interest for some time. Now, he is missing with his family.”

More than 200 people have invested in the chit fund firm, the complainants said. They filed complaints before the economic offences wing.
