Tirupur

: Voicing their concerns over the steep rise in yarn prices, CPM members staged a demonstration here on Saturday. They said the prices have increased by 30 in the past week alone.
P Balan, district secretary, CITU Street Vendors’ Welfare Wing, said the knitwear makers were badly hit by the price hike. “We are struggling with fewer orders after the Covid-19 pandemic. At this juncture, the sudden hike in yarn prices has come as a blow to our revival plans.”
C

Dhandapani

, president,

Tirupur Hosiery Yarn Merchants Association

, said the raw material price hike would shoot up the knitwear prices. “The prices have increased by approximately Rs30 on all counts of yarn. While the price rise is attributed to the increase in international rate, this will directly impact the finished products, as knitwear manufacturers may increase the rate to tide over the crisis.”
The protesters also raised slogans against the Union government and urged the Centre to bring the spiralling fuel and

LPG

prices under control. CPM district executive committee member M Rajagopal also participated in the protest.
