Country-made bomb used by fisherman claims one life

Salem: A country-made bomb used for fishing claimed a man’s life near Poolampatti in Salem district on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as M Mohan Kumar, 23, of Avarangkadu near Pallipalayam in Namakkal district.
Mohan was visiting his relative in Poolampatti, with his friend R Boopathi, 23, on Wednesday. Around 6pm the duo went to the Cauvery river for a bath.
Mohan Kumar entered the river while Boopathi was standing on a rock. About the same time, a fisherman, identified as K Perumal, 45, from Poolampatti threw a country-made into the river.
“The bomb suddenly blast underwater,” said Boopathi. Mohan Kumar sustained injuries and died on the spot. It is learnt that Perumal used low density, country-made bombs to catch big fish from the river.
Following an inquiry, police managed to nab Perumal during the early hours of Thursday. “The fisherman admitted that he used the country-made bomb for fishing,” said a police official from Poolampatti police station. He added that Perumal was arrested based on his confession. A case has been registered and further inquiry is on.
