COIMBATORE: The chief executive officer, R Suganya, of the Coimbatore smart city limited submitted her resignation to the Coimbatore corporation commissioner, K Vijayakarthikeyan on Monday morning. Vijayakarthikeyan told TOI that the resignation has been accepted and the CEO has been relieved from her duties. Suganya, who is the daughter of the former AIADMK MLA from Perur constituency in Coimbatore has stated mental stress and unwarranted political controversies against her appointment as the major reason. She has stated on her resignation letter that she was facing a lot of mental stress since the day she assumed office as there were many comments and controversies over her appointment. She said that she was fully qualified for the job and was appointed as per the norms based on merit. "Since my father is a politician, my appointment was questioned. Wherever I have worked, I have worked I have done my best and have gained a good reputation. I would have done the same here. I have come to serve the city. But due to unnecessary comments and controversies which were politically motivated I do not wish to continue in this post," she has stated in the resignation letter.
The corporation commissioner will be the acting CEO until the next board meeting is held and the decision is taken on re-appointment. Several political parties, urban experts, and city residents took up this cause and protested against the appointment. Online campaigns were also initiated requesting to remove Suganya from the post. She assumed office on August 11.
