Coimbatore corporation presents deficit budget for financial year 2026-27

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation on Monday presented a deficit budget for the financial year (FY) 2026-2027, with a projected shortfall of Rs 126.21 crore.The budget indicated that planned expenditure would exceed anticipated revenue, requiring the corporation to manage the gap through fiscal reforms.
The projected receipts, including revenue and capital, are estimated at Rs 4915.5 crore. The total expenditure, including revenue and capital, is projected at Rs 5,041.71 crore. The budget projected a shortfall of Rs 126.21 crore, which has decreased by Rs 13.62 crore from the 2025-26 budget. The current year budget was presented with a deficit of Rs 139.83 crore, with expected receipts of Rs 4,757.16 crore and expenditure of Rs 4,617.33 crore. The 2026-27 budget has emphasized spending on education and parks. The corporation has proposed to establish common dining areas in corporation schools, allocating an amount of Rs 10 crore. Furthermore, Rs 10 crore have been allocated for the renovation of 100-year-old school buildings. The budget allocated Rs 60 lakh for the formation of a cricket team and training them, selecting interested students from five corporation higher secondary schools. The corporation had commenced 59 new kindergarten sections in the current financial year. The proposed budget allocated Rs 10 crore for creating play areas and procuring play materials for students in these kindergarten sections. Further, the corporation has proposed to create two more dialysis centres at Saravanampatti and Singanallur at Rs 4 crore each. The corporation has also announced plans to create recreational centres for senior citizens in two locations at a cost of Rs 4 crore each. The corporation also plans to conduct a flower show at Semmozhi Park every year. In addition, it has also proposed to establish a road safety park on the premises at a cost of Rs 4 crore in collaboration with NGOs. Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said, "The proposed road safety park model was recommended by a Supreme Court judge who visited the district recently. The model will be the first of its kind in India with virtual and interactive road safety learning methods for children."
