COIMBATORE: A special sub-inspector of police (SSI), attached to the crime branch-criminal investigation department (CB-CID) in Coimbatore city, has made a two-minute short film on drug abuse.

Director of ‘Say No to Drugs', C Maheswaran, 56, who has been serving the police force for three decades, said filmmaking has been a passion for long. “This is my 11th short film. With the rise in ganja cases, it is important that such a message reaches a larger audience. Previously, I made 10 short films and six songs for the department, for creating awareness on issues such as drunk driving and helmet use," Maheswaran told TOI.

CB-CID additional director general of police (ADGP) Abhay Kumar Singh released ‘Say No to Drugs' in Chennai three days ago. “I could not have done this without the support of my senior officers, who put time and effort into releasing this awareness video for the benefit of the public,” Maheswaran said.

His short film 'Locked House', made in 2022, attempted to sensitize the public to lock houses and inform local police before leaving the town, to curb burglaries.

Before he joined the service, Maheswaran was doing social work by making short films in his hometown Vellalakundam of Vazhapadi in Salem district. He attempted to make a Tamil TV series, but had to give it up midway after getting meritorious admission into the uniformed service.
