Coimbatore boy wins second prize for short film on cleanliness

COIMBATORE: A

20-year-old student from Coimbatore

won the second prize in the short film competition organised by the central government.

Vimal M, a second year B Com professional accounting student in

Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science

, received the award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday.

The competition was called Swachh Sankalp Sey Swachh Siddhi. Vimal won the second place for his short film under the NSS category.

Speaking to TOI, Vimal said, “I had first sent my short film to

Bharathiar University

where they shortlisted entries and sent it to the central government. Around 20 films from Bharathiar University were shortlisted.”

The short film is about not to dump wastes. “The message conveyed through the film is that if everyone ensures that no waste is dumped in the streets, it will become easy to make India clean one day,” he said.

The short film is an outcome of the projects in which Vimal had participated as an NSS (National Service Scheme) volunteer at his college.

“We have constructed toilets, carried out

cleanliness drives

,

awareness campaigns

and waste segregation activities across the city. The short film is a depiction of these activities and the success we have achieved,” Vimal said.

His short film was the only entry to have been selected from Tamil Nadu for the final round, Vimal said.

“The first prize went to a student from Assam,” he added.
