According to police, the Class XII student had fallen in love with a girl whom he met at a coaching centre. The boy used to send text messages on her mobile phone.
Recently, the girl's parents came to know about this and went to the meet the boy at his school on Friday morning. But the school headmistress did not allow them to meet him. However, the headmistress later called the boy and advised him to not to indulge in such things and to concentrate on his studies only.
Upset over the incident and also fearing that his parents would rebuke him if they came to know about the matter, the depressed minor committed suicide, police said.
The deceased has been identified as H Manojkumar from Ananda Housing Colony at Velandipalayam, who had been going to a coaching centre at Kovilmedu in the city for the past couple of years. Last year, he met a girl at the centre, who was then a student of Class XII. Manojkumar fell in love with the girl and soon started to send text messages on her mobile phone. But his love went unreciprocated. Recently, the girl's parents came to know about the matter.
On Friday the parents went to Manojkumar's school to meet him. But the headmistress Mallika told them that she would herself look into the matter.
Later, the headmistress called Manojkumar and asked him to focus on his studies. After school, the depressed boy went to home and told his mother Sumathi that he was not feeling well. Later, when Sumathi was busy with household chores, Manojkumar went to his room and locked it from inside and hanged himself with one of his mother's sarees.
Soon Sumathi felt that something was wrong and raised an alarm. Her neighbours broke open the door and found Manojkumar hanging. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Later, Saibaba Colony police sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for post-mortem. The body was handed over to the family on Saturday. The boy's father P Hariharan, 45, is a carpenter and his elder brother H Arunkumar, 22, works at a city private firm.
