COIMBATORE: A 21-year-old student of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore drowned in a swimming pool on the campus on Friday.
The deceased student has been identified as C Vijayakumar of Bargur in Erode district. He was pursuing an MSc in computer science at the university.
On Friday afternoon, he and eight of his friends went to the swimming pool on the campus to swim.
After their allotted time ended, his friends came out of the pool, but he did not. Though his friends called him, he did not respond. Following this, his friends jumped into the pool and rescued him. He was in an unconscious state. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital with the help of faculty members who were present near the swimming pool. However, doctors declared him dead.
A staff member said Vijayakumar had been swimming for nearly an hour. He reportedly collapsed in the water, though the exact reason was not known.
His body was sent to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
The Vadavalli police registered a case and began investigations.
