Vijaya Nagar

in

Udumalpet

here on Sunday.

Police identified the deceased as S Kumaravel of Eripalayam in Udumalpet, urban secretary of Hindu Munnani.

Kumaravel’s friend

Valarmathi

of Vijaya Nagar had stood as a guarantor to a 30,000 loan taken by her neighbour R Kavitha from a self-help group, police said. “After coming to know that Kavitha and her husband Ranjith were vacating their rented house at Vijaya Nagar without repaying the loan, Valarmathi and her husband Ashwin visited Kavitha’s house on Sunday afternoon, and confronted her. Valarmathi sought Kumaravel’s help and he turned up at the spot. The trio asked Kavitha and Ranjith to repay the loan before vacating the house. An argument broke out and in the ensuing fight, Ranjith, his friends Senthil, 31 and Athiyappan, 43, beat Kumaravel to death,” a police officer said.

The Udumalpet police arrested Senthil and Athiyappan, and have launched a search for Ranjith. Police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
